I like to think that I’m a man of the people, someone who’s somewhat in touch with what’s going in the world, someone who’s open-minded and understanding of various practices and walks of life.

I’m not a big fan of text speak. And by that I mean I haven’t really been a good shorthand texter. And by that I mean I can’t stand to do it. It makes me crazy. I’m usually okay with receiving texts with some abbreviations (to a certain degree) but I can’t bring myself to do the same. I have to spell out words, include some punctuation, avoid sounding like I’m 14 and illiterate, you know.

This may just be me getting older but some things that are used as shorthand by kids younger than I are simply ridiculous. More ridiculous still are the frantic, yet mostly futile, attempts to decipher kids’ code. It’s comical to me. Now, I fully support parents trying to understand their kids and reach out to them or help them. You gotta do that. But where the heck is some of this stuff coming from?

I read this article today informing parents of some of what their kids’ texts may mean and it’s truly enlightening. I thought I’d share just a few of them.

If these are even legitimate, commonplace terms that people use (which I’m not convinced they are) how on earth do people remember everything? And my biggest question: how do you tell when there’s been a typo?

Oh, you crazy kids. YCK. 143

I know Thanksgiving is officially behind us but I can still be thankful, right? No? Oh.

Not that it’s ever really too far from my mind but I was reminded last night how valuable my friends are to me, how so very good it is to have people I can completely trust and be wholly myself with. I am terribly thankful for people in my life who make it all a bit better, all while making me a better ‘me’ in the process.

Lame words but I hope you get what I’m sayin’.

You’s good people. Hear me?

On Meditation

Meditatio is the discipline we give to keeping the memory active in the act of reading. Meditation moves from looking at the words of the text to entering the world of the text. As we take this text into ourselves, we find that the text is taking us into itself. For the world of the text is far larger and more real than our minds and experience.

The biblical text is a witness to God revealing himself. This revelation is not simply a series of random oracles that illuminate momentary obscurities or guide us through perplexing circumstances. This text is God-revealing: God creating, God saving, God blessing.

The text has a context and the context is huge, massive, comprehensive. St. Paul is staggered by it: “O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!” (Rom. 11:33).

-Eugene Peterson, Eat This Book (p. 99)

I dig people of action. I love watching people with a vision sprint toward their goal with everything they have. It’s hard not to be inspired by such fervor.

Enter Stan. He’s launched a clothing company whose aim it is to provide for those in need with a chunk of the proceeds. What a champ.

The latest step is to get $50,000 from Pepsi to further this mission of bringing change to the world. The Pepsi Refresh Project awards $1.3million to the highest-voted ideas so those ideas can take a huge leap forward in progress.

I’ve been in this mood to catch up on media that I hadn’t yet dealt with. Here’s the latest from my visit to Memphis in October!
