More Than Meets The Ear

I had this moment yesterday when I realized that music is an extremely nuanced artistic expression for me. I say “for me” because I’m sure similar expressions can be experienced by others via different forms of art that I don’t always perceive. In any case, music has always been this simple yet complex being. A melody, a lyric, instrumentation, a voice all come together to create a living thing that is greater than the sum of its parts, a creature that can reach into your soul and shake you silly.

Last night I realized again that there are moments when honesty and sincerity in music surpass the musicality involved. Not sure how to explain it but I think you just know when a person believes what they’re singing – you can tell. And for me, that speaks on a level all its own. Most of the time that sincerity I hear will drown out any imperfections that may be happening with the music supporting it. I wonder if any amount of talent can actually replace that heart you hear poured into a song.

Anyone know what I’m talking about?
